June 2, 2026
The Arctic Research Open House drew more than 660 community members on May 14. The
open house is an annual event held on the West Ridge of the University of Â黨ÊÓƵ Fairbanks’
Troth Yeddha’ campus, showcasing the university’s Arctic research.
Through conversations with researchers, hands-on activities and demonstrations, attendees
of all ages explored UAF research, which addresses challenges and opportunities across
Â黨ÊÓƵ and the Arctic.

Kjell Olson demonstrates how a software defined radio (a system in which many traditional
radio functions are handled through software rather than hardware) can be used by
showing how the walkie-talkie in his hand sends signals. The equipment on the table
is a prototype of an SDR setup he is working on.
