User Forum Summary for 2025
Toolik hosted two User Forums in the 2025 field season – on June 20 and August 18. At least 15 people attended the first forum on June 20 and at least 22 people attended the second. A combined total of 13 staff attended at least one forum. More users were in attendance but their names were not recorded.
Summary
The forums provided space for TFS to communicate updates on past requests and reminders of policies like check-out procedures and cafeteria hygiene practices, or upcoming efforts like the fall construction work. There were no major concerns communicated from residents at the forums in 2024-2025. For the first time in several years, there were no reported issues with internet access in the User Forums. Users shared new common-use gear/equipment requests, including GPR, surveying equipment, thaw probes, and a more powerful hand drill for coring. There were concerns about overcrowding in the bike tent making it hard to access bikes, and requests for brake repairs on bikes. The kitchen received many compliments and a few requests for disinfectant wipes, low-sodium options, and specific food items. There was also a concern about how to make the kitchen staff feel more approachable, which the station managers are working to address. Users also requested a calendar view for myToolik reservations, fans for WeatherPorts and dorm rooms when temperatures are hot, a swing or hammocks under the dining hall deck, sterilizers for menstrual cups, new kayaks, earplugs, slip-grip tape on the sauna deck, and a privacy wall for showering on sauna decks, among other miscellaneous items.
